Igbo Agenda Dialogue Unveils Comprehensive Political Reawakening Strategy Ahead of 2027
The Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD) has unveiled a bold and comprehensive political reawakening strategy aimed at repositioning the Igbo people for meaningful participation and influence in Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The initiative, announced by IAD Convener and elder statesman, Chief Chekwas Okorie, marks a renewed effort to address longstanding political marginalisation of the Igbo while promoting unity, civic responsibility, peaceful engagement, and constitutional participation.
A Call for Political Responsibility, Not Confrontation
Speaking on the vision of the organisation, Chief Okorie emphasised that the Igbo political struggle must move away from apathy, emotional reactions, and violence, and instead embrace structured political participation as the most effective tool for change.
According to him, political relevance in a democracy is neither begged for nor forcefully taken, but earned through numbers, organisation, and active engagement.
“No group in a democracy can command respect without exercising its voting power. Our objective is to reawaken the political consciousness of the Igbo people and reposition them as a decisive force within Nigeria,” he said.
Addressing Low Voter Turnout
A core concern driving the IAD initiative is the consistently low voter turnout in Igbo-dominated areas. Despite having millions of eligible voters across the South-East and the diaspora, only an estimated 2.2 million Igbo voters participated in the 2023 presidential election.
This gap, IAD notes, has significantly weakened the region’s bargaining power in national politics.
To reverse this trend, the organisation has set an ambitious but achievable target of mobilising over 35 million Igbo voters by 2027 — including approximately 20 million within the South-East and 15 million across other regions of Nigeria where Igbo communities reside.
The strategy prioritises:
-
Massive voter registration drives
-
Continuous civic education
-
Grassroots political mobilisation
-
Engagement of youths, women, professionals, and the diaspora
First-Ever Igbo Political Summit in 56 Years
As part of the reawakening campaign, IAD announced plans to host the first Igbo Political Summit in over 56 years, scheduled to hold in April 2026 in Enugu.
The summit will bring together traditional leaders, political stakeholders, professionals, youth groups, women organisations, and Igbo leaders from across Nigeria and the diaspora.
A major highlight of the summit will be the unveiling of the Igbo Political Charter — the first comprehensive political framework for the Igbo since the historic Ahiara Declaration.
The Charter is expected to:
-
Define collective Igbo political interests
-
Outline principles for engagement with national politics
-
Promote unity across party lines
-
Provide a common negotiation framework for future political alliances
Call for National Reconciliation and Justice
In addition to political mobilisation, the Igbo Agenda Dialogue has also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take deliberate steps towards healing and national reconciliation.
IAD urged the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other prisoners of conscience, describing such action as a powerful gesture of goodwill that could rebuild trust, calm tensions, and open the door for constructive political engagement in the South-East.
The organisation reiterated its belief that dialogue, justice, and inclusion remain essential to sustainable national unity.
A Message to Igbo Youths and the Diaspora
Chief Okorie also appealed directly to Igbo youths and professionals, stressing that political disengagement only deepens marginalisation.
“Our votes are stronger than protests without structure. The future belongs to those who organise, participate, and remain consistent within the system,” he stated.
IAD emphasised that the political reawakening project is non-partisan, focusing on long-term collective interests rather than short-term party affiliations.
Looking Ahead to 2027
With the 2027 elections approaching, the Igbo Agenda Dialogue reaffirmed its commitment to building a politically conscious, united, and proactive Igbo constituency capable of influencing outcomes at local, state, and national levels.
The organisation called on all Igbo individuals, groups, institutions, and stakeholders to support the initiative, participate in upcoming engagements, and take ownership of the collective political future of the Igbo nation.
